Hi, I'm Taylor Severn and I have an extensive background in creative structural design within the packaging field. Currently, I develop packaging for toys and collectibles at Mattel. I started as a Packaging Engineer and now serve as the Manager of Packaging Engineering for the Vehicles category. In this role, I am responsible for managing a team of engineers developing package structures across Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Thomas & Friends, and Disney/Pixar Cars. Projects range from low priced items like the #1 selling toy in the world - the Hot Wheels Basic Car - to a wide range of playsets and high-end collector items. I have had the opportunity to design many unique packaging solutions and direct a team of talented engineers through numerous high profile projects.
I am a Cal Poly SLO alumni, where I studied all things packaging. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology, and dual minors in Packaging and Graphic Communication. The goal of my studies was to gain a well-rounded understanding of how the design, communication, and engineering functions all work together to create successful packaging solutions.
The best packaging considers how structural design and graphic communication can play together to provide the consumer with a memorable shopping and unboxing experience. This thinking is how I approach each project I work on, whether the item costs $1 or $1000.
Creativity is the driving force behind my work. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had and I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead!
